Scratching splits three ways. There are 50 upright posts, 26 flat boards and mats, 10 towers and trees, and 9 cardboard scratchers. Sixty-eight of them print a height, and the tallest reaches 163 cm. An upright post only does its job if the cat can stretch to full length against it without the base rocking, so height and footprint matter as much as the covering. Flat boards suit cats that go for the carpet or a stair edge instead of the sofa arm.

How tall should a scratching post be?
